Social Collaboration: Businesses Become More Social
Social software tools are increasingly being used for internal collaboration and communication in businesses.

Gartner defines the following characteristics of Social Software being used in the Workplace:
- Find out about each other personally or professionally
- Discover other people with common interests
- Mine networks of contacts and acquaintances for advice, references and referrals
- Form teams, communities or informal groups, and invite external participants from other organizations
- Work together on the same work objects
- Discuss and comment jointly on work
- Organize work from a mutual perspective
- Helps users identify relevant work
- Alert users to information or events that might be relevant to them
- Learn from others’ expertise
Gartner organized vendors in the Workplace Social Software (WSS) space into the following four quadrants:

- Challengers: Tibco Software, VMWare, Atlassian
- Niche Players: OpenText, Saba, Socialtext (Bedford Funding), Huddle, Bluekiwi (Atos), Igloo, Novell, Liferay, Moxie Software
- Visionaries: Telligent, Cisco, SuccessFactors (SAP), Acquia
