Security: CISOs Adopting in Order to Survive a New Business Environment
Andrew Rose, principal analyst at Forrester, wrote on his blog that “CISOs can’t afford to remain where they are; they need to decide whether they want to move up or down… The ‘next-gen’ CISOs are commonly savvy business professionals, experienced at implementing change and evolving processes, and adept at dealing with strategies, resource plans and board-level discussions… CISOs wanting to move up will also have to fall out of love with the thrill of firefighting and other tactical aspects of security operations… Any CISO who chooses to pursue the top position should start building their business skills now, broadening their focus beyond IT security and building a support team.”
Rose asserts that the role of the CISO needs to change with the needs of the business. The CISO role has been one of a defender of information. In the future the CISO needs to be more of a risk assessment advisor. Rose lists the top priorities that CISO’s in today’s world are working with, versus how CISO priorities will be changed by 2018:
