Mobile Security: Half of Businesses Have Lost More than $500,000 from Mobile Security Incidents
A recent survey by CheckPoint finds that many IT departments are throughly overwhelmed by open BYOD policies. 96 percent of IT departments that allow BYOD say that the number of personal devices connecting to their networks is increasing, and 45 percent say that he number of personal devices has grown by a factor of five over just the last two years.
52 percent of businesses surveyed by CheckPoint reported that they had been victim to mobile security incidents over the past year that resulted in losses of more than $500,000. Even for the 45 percent of the survey respondents classified as SMBs with less than 1000 employees, there were losses from mobile security incidents that exceeded $100,000.
Of all the major mobile platforms, Android was cited by 49 percent of businesses as the one with the greatest perceived security risk, more than Apple, Windows or Blackberry.
Tomer Teller, security researcher at Check Point Software, said that “without question, the explosion of BYOD, mobile apps, and cloud services, has created a herculean task to protect corporate information for businesses both large and small. An effective mobile security strategy will focus on protecting corporate information on the multitude of devices and implementing proper secure access controls to information and applications on the go. Equally important is educating employees about best practices as majority of businesses are more concerned with careless employees than cybercriminals.”
