Storage: The Future is With Software
IDC reports that the enterprise storage market is shifting to one that is centered around software. Sales from file- and object-based storage (FOBS) are expected to reach $23 billion in 2013 and to grow to more than $38 billion by 2017.
FOBS solutions are frequently being used for in-place analytics and NoSQL databases for applications like archiving and eDiscovery. Some of the shift towards FOBS is occurring because of the dramatic growth of cloud-based mobile and social services. This move to the cloud has meant that storage is increasingly being consumed via IP connectivity. The growth of public and private cloud archive systems is favoring object-based and object-oriented file system storage.
Ashish Nadkarni, Research Director of Storage Systems at IDC, said that “the future of storage is software based. FOBS solutions are much more versatile and will quickly outpace more rigid, hardware-based options. Scale-up solutions, including unitary file servers and scale-up appliances and gateways, will fall on hard times throughout the forecast period, experiencing sluggish growth through 2016 before beginning to decline in 2017. On the other hand, scale-out file- and object-based solutions – delivered either as software, virtual storage appliances, hardware appliances, or self-built for delivering cloud-based offerings – are forecast to show robust growth with a compound annual growth rate of 24.5% from 2012 to 2017.”
