Cloud Computing: Businesses Rethink Use of the Public Cloud
While Amazon’s public cloud has achieved great success, some businesses are becoming disillusioned with its services. A survey by RackSpace found that 60 percent of businesses using the public-cloud are considering pulling back from their use. 41 percent say they plan to partially move from the public cloud while 19 percent go so far as to say that they plan to move all of their workloads.
What are the alternatives to the public cloud? On-premise hosting or Hybrid clouds.
Kit Colbert, an engineer at VMware, told Wired’s Cade Metz, that “I don’t know how much this is written about… Within IT departments, public clouds do tend to get more expensive over time, especially when you reach a certain scale.” Businesses like Zynga, MemSQL, Mixpanel, and Tradesy have all either moved or plan moves from Amazon’s cloud.
Darren Robertson, data scientist at Action for Children, says: “In the past we used public cloud for many of our applications and workloads, but as we grew it became clear that some of these applications were becoming too complex for a public cloud-only deployment. ”
Eric Frenkiel, founder of MemSQL, said that “the public cloud is phenomenal if you really need its elasticity. But if you don’t — if you do a consistent amount of workload — it’s far, far better to go in-house.”
These are examples of businesses moving to on-premise. But many companies are also considering adopting hybrid cloud solutions.
John Engates, CTO of Rackspace, said that companies are turning “to the hybrid cloud because it can combine the best of public cloud, private cloud and dedicated servers, delivering a common architecture that can be tailored to create the best fit for their specific needs. For example, instead of trying to run a big database in the public cloud on its own, which can be very problematic, businesses can leverage the hybrid cloud to run that database much more efficiently on a dedicated server that can burst into the public cloud when needed.”
