Cloud Computing: Virtual Private Clouds (VPC) to Displace Private Clouds?
Security is one of the biggest challenge that many organizations need to address before being able to adopt cloud computing. Many businesses are coming to the conclusion that they need to steer clear of the public cloud and adopt a private cloud strategy. A private cloud comes with the benefits of security, scalability, redundancy, and elimination of the need for dedicated servers. But compared to the public cloud, while the private cloud is the clear winner when considering security, use of the public cloud is typically more cost efficient and scalable.
But IDC says now that the private cloud approach is likely to begin to lose momentum. Public cloud providers are beginning to roll out their answer to address at least some of the security concerns with a technology that’s being dubbed ‘Virtual Private Cloud‘ (VPC). Amazon’s AWS is one of the first vendors to offer VPC. The advantage of using a vendor like Amazon include economics, scale and pace of innovation. But VPC technology also offers privacy controls similar to what’s found in private cloud technology.
In a VPC, users can spin up virtual machine (VM) instances and configure them into a virtual network. Users then have full control over setting up IP addresses, routing tables, gateways and subnets. Resources can be aggregated logically into subnets and secured by firewalls.
IDC sees VPC’s taking over the public cloud market, followed by a period of commoditization and consolidation among cloud vendors.
Robert Mahowald, Research Vice President at IDC, said that “IDC anticipates that virtual private cloud will be the predominant operational model for companies wanting to take advantage of the speed and lower capital costs associated with cloud computing while cloud service providers will welcome the move away from the expense of dedicated 1:1 physical systems for delivering their business process and datacenter outsourcing and other services.”
