Enterprise Software: Collaboration and Social Network Software Segments are Fastest Growth Segments
The global software market grew 5.5 percent to reach $179 billion in the first half of 2013, reported IDC. Segments of the software market that showed the strongest growth were big data and analytics, content applications, and system software.
While the applications software market grew at a rate close to that of the entire software market at 5.8 percent, much stronger growth was seen in the enterprise social network software segment which grew at a rate of 28.3 percent.
“It stands to reason that software to manage, access, and share information (structured and unstructured) continues to be a priority for competing in today’s economy and a driver of software market growth,” concluded the IDC report.
Henry D. Morris, Senior Vice President for Worldwide Software and Services, said that “Enterprises are seeing new opportunities to drive new and improved products and services by leveraging information. Therefore, it stands to reason that software to manage, access, and share information (structured and unstructured) continues to be a priority for competing in today’s economy and a driver of software market growth.”
The software market leader by far is Microsoft with nearly $32.9 billion in the first half of 2013, more than double second-place vendor Oracle. IBM, SAP and Symantec came in at third, fourth and fifth places, respectively.
