Big Data: Challenged by Complex Compliance Requirements
Just 4 percent of organizations say that they are fully prepared to effectively manage the governance and privacy of Big Data, according to a global survey by ISACA.
Jeff Spivey, ISACA international vice president, said that “deep concerns about privacy and security … show that enterprises need to establish and openly communicate policies around the use of personal data to preserve trust in information.”
Steven De Haes, Associate Professor Information Systems Management at University of Antwerp & Antwerp Management School, said that “companies in all industries and all geographies are struggling with massive volumes of data and increasingly complex compliance requirements. When governance structures and processes are in place, enterprises are much more equipped to handle these challenges. At many enterprises, information is spread across multiple isolated silos, repeated in redundant copies scattered throughout the company, and underutilized.”
To help businesses better govern and manage information, ISACA recommends the use of the COBIT 5 business framework. COBIT 5 was introduced by ISACA in April 2012. COBIT (Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology) brings together the concepts of control requirements, technical issues and business risks into a single discipline. And, as applied by businesses managing Big Data, COBIT provides benefits for addressing governance and privacy issues.
