Big Data Continues to Dominate the IT Conversation in 2014
A report by IDG Enterprise finds that 2014 will be another year where Big Data and analytics dominate much of the IT news reporting.
IDG Enterprise defines Big Data as “large volumes of a wide variety of data collected from various sources across the enterprise including transactional data from enterprise applications/databases, social media data, mobile device data, unstructured data/documents, machine generated data and more.”
The report finds that “Big Data as an enterprise initiative is beginning to gain momentum… 12 percent have already deployed a big data project. These individuals estimate that their organization will spend an average of $8 million on big data initiatives over the next year… Business management, particularly the CEO, is leading the charge on the need for big data strategies… Business leadership is looking to IT management to build the necessary strategies to utilize big data based on company goals. Once implemented, IT executives play a key role in capturing, searching/storing, sharing, analyzing and visualizing data.”
Some findings of the IDG Enterprise report include:
- Data is expected to grow nearly exponentially over the next 12-18 months in many organizations
- Larger enterprises are further ahead in rolling out Big Data projects than SMB organizations
- Organizations are still challenged in finding qualified employees to analyze and manage their data
- Organizations are investing in Big-Data-focused skill sets with their new hires. The following job categories are key: data scientist (27 percent), data architects (24 percent), data analysts (24 percent), data visualizers (23 percent), research analysts (21 percent).
Top goals businesses are hoping that Big Data will help them with in 2014 include:
- Improved decision making (59 percent)
- Quicker decision making (53 percent)
- Planning and Forecasting (47 percent)
- Help in developing new products and services and new revenue streams (47 percent)
- Help in acquiring and retaining new customers (44 percent)
