Big Data: Enabler for Better and Quicker Decisions

60 percent of businesses are investigating the use of Big Data to help them improve the quality of their decisions.  53 percent said that the ability to make quicker decisions was their principle motivator for implementing the technology,

In a survey of 750 IT decision makers, half representing enterprises (1000+ employees) and half representing small to medium-sized companies (less than 1000 employees), IDG collected the following results:

  • 44 percent of companies say that fiscal constraints are their biggest roadblock to moving forward with their success on a big data program
  • 20 percent plan to spend between $1-10 million on Big Data in the next year.  9 percent are investing more than $10 million
  • Large companies report that they’re managing in average now 291 terabytes of data.  Even smaller companies say that they’re managing as much as 57 terabytes.
  • 90 percent of Big Data programs are being driven by their IT group.  Only 36 percent of Big Data programs have leadership from the business side
