Cloud Computing: Adoption Occurring at a Slower Pace than Expected

By Dick Weisinger

While cloud technology is clearly seeing wide acceptance and adoption, the rate of that adoption isn’t occurring as quickly as originally thought.  A recent study by Bitglass surveyed more than 81,000 different companies about their usage of cloud technologies.

The three main findings of the Bitglass report are:

  • Enterprise cloud adoption has been fast, but not as fast as predicted by some analysts
  • Worries of cloud security remain a major blocker to cloud adoption
  • Google is a clear winner in the cloud email market

Nat Kausik, CEO of Bitglass, said that “since public companies are generally larger and older, they are more likely to have history and substantial ties to Microsoft.  We believe that the lower rate of cloud adoption among public companies is due to additional regulatory and reporting burdens that private companies do not face. Given the compliance and audit capabilities lacking in most cloud apps, we expect third-party security technology will be required to help close this gap.”

A report by Accenture earlier in the year, found that cloud adoption across federal government agencies is also lagging.  Only five percent of agencies with cloud migration plans were able to complete them.  Agencies cite lack of cloud skills and the government’s lengthy procurement process as major problems.
