Big Data: A Market Dominated by Services

By Dick Weisinger

Thomas H. Davenport, said that “every company has big data in its future and every company will eventually be in the data business.”

Geoffrey Moore, author and consultant, said that “without big data, you are blind and deaf and in the middle of a freeway.”

A report from Wikibon estimates that the Big Data market grew at a stunning 58 percent in 2013, reaching $18.6 billion.  This includes sales from hardware, software and services.  But while Big Data software often gets most of the hype, software really only represents less than a quarter of total Big-Data related sales.  The breakdown of Big Data sales is as follows.

  • 40 percent from services
  • 38 percent from hardware
  • 22 percent from software

Wikibon forecasts another year of rapid growth in 2014 of about 53 percent.  The report expects that the software and cloud will make up a growing fraction of total sales, edging out services, as the market and technologies mature.  The report also notes that products will increasingly be more business- rather than technology-focused.
