Open Data and Health Care: Medicaid and Drug Interaction Databases Released
While the US Federal government may not be moving as quickly as many would like to see in releasing Open Data sets, the FDA earlier this month released a four million record data set of information about drug and medication interactions. The data is being made available to app developers to build software based on the drug information which had been collected from 2004 to 2013.
The release of the data set follows a similar release by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid in April of this year. That data summarized Medicare-provided services and physician charges for the most common inpatient and outpatient services.
Bryan Sivak, HHS chief technology officer, said that “these public data resources provide a better understanding of Medicare utilization, the burden of chronic conditions among beneficiaries and the implications for our health care system and how this varies by where beneficiaries are located. This information can be used to improve care coordination and health outcomes for Medicare beneficiaries nationwide, and we are looking forward to seeing what the community will do with these releases.”
Taha Kass-Hout, chief health informatics officer of the FDA, said that “OpenFDA offers a scalable platform that can be easily searched and queried across many distinct datasets, and can be easily redeployed or altered to fit a variety of purposes, and provides an innovative public data search and analytics solution.”
