Technology: Internet Trends for 2014
Mary Meeker, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) analyst, recently reported on her take of internet trends for 2014.
Some of her insights include:
Cheaper Computing – The costs of computing have dropped about one-third every year over the last 20 years. In particular, storage costs have dropped an average of 38 percent every year since 1992. Computing hardware has dropped 33 percent every year since 1990. Bandwidth costs have dropped 27 percent every year since 1999. And smartphone costs have dropped 5 percent every year since 2008.
Growing Cyber Threats – Vulnerable systems are compromised within less than 15 minutes after connecting to the internet.
‘Multi-screen’ Users – Users increasingly use their smartphones while they’re watching TV or browsing the web. Multi-screen consumers soak up more content in less time.
Smartphone Growth – Smartphone sales are soaring at 205 percent growth. The fastest growth is seen in the BRIC countries.
Mobile Data Traffic – Mobile data traffic is up 81 percent annually, with the bulk of that accounted for by video.
