In an attempt to ease the pain of writing Apple iOS mobile apps, Apple has introduced a new language that is targeted to replace Objective-C.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, announced that “we have a new programming language.  The language is called Swift and it totally rules.  Swift is fast, it is modern, it is designed for safety and it enables a level of interactivity in development that you’ve never seen on a platform… When it comes to speed, Swift is great. Objective C is fast but Swift is faster still.  Swift is also modern with features like Closures, Generics, Type inference, multiple return types and Namespaces.”  Swift code is touted as being more concise than Objective-C, and as being significantly faster too.

Analysts at Barclay’s see Swift as an important competitive advantage over the Android environment, making it easier and quicker for developers to create new apps and get them to market sooner.

Frank Gillett, analyst at Forrester, said that Apple’s Swift programming language is a “big deal.   It promises to make it easier, more accessible, and faster to develop secure and compelling apps.”
