John Newton and the Open Source Alfresco ECM team are celebrating their third birthday this week. Newton’s Alfresco is the scrappy low-budget high-quality challenger to EMC’s Documentum, a company Newton founded, and other behemoths of the commercial ECM space.

In an amazingly short three years Alfresco has managed to match the most sought-after features of an ECM system, like Library Services, Web Content Management, and Records Management. And then one-upped the commercial systems with some true innovation.

Part of their success has been with their APIs. The Alfresco APIs provide for many integration and development options that include Java, XPath, JavaScript, JSR-170, RESTful Web Services, and Web Script technologies. The breadth of the Alfresco APIs have enabled their CM infrastructure to be very flexible and easily integrated into a variety of other applications and systems. Recent highlights are Alfresco’s integrations with FaceBook and iGoogle.

Alfresco accomplished a lot in 2007, particularly in the areas of Web Content Management and Records Management. We were so impressed that Formtek signed on as a Gold Partner with Alfresco last year. 2008 looks to be even more interesting in the direction that Alfresco is driving Content Management technology and we plan to be part of it.
