Open Source: Companies Use Open Source Because of the Quality and Security
Two recent reports have shed some insights about the current state of Open Source.
The first of these was conducted by Linux.com and the New Stack. The result of that report and survey identified the following projects as currently the top five most popular Open Source projects:
Docker has come out of nowhere to get to the number two spot on this list. Steven Vaughan-Nichols of ZDNet commented on Docker’s rapid rise to number two, saying “to go from nowhere to the second most popular project in 12 months? That’s amazing and speaks to its rockstar rise in popularity.”
A second report done by Black Duck Software and North Bridge Venture Partners investigated how and why Open Source software is being used today. Most interestingly, the survey found that the top reason why companies choose Open Source today isn’t because of price considerations. It’s because of the quality of the software. 80 percent of companies using open source say the number one reason they use open source is because of the quality. In addition, those same companies say that open source usually wins out when comparing competitive features and technical capabilities of open source against proprietary software. And 72 percent of companies say that open source software is generally more secure than proprietary.
