Gartner 2015 Crystal Ball: Top 10 Technology Predictions for the next Five Years

Garter recently made ten predictions on how technology will influence businesses over the next five years.  The predictions are grouped into three categories:

Smart machines

  • By 2017, a new computer algorithm will enable at least one significant new digital business to be launched
  • By 2018, compared to traditional business models, digital businesses will have halve the number of business process workers and use five times the number of key digital business jobs.
  • By 2018, the introduction of smart machines and industrialized services will reduce the total cost of business operations by 30 percent
  • By 2020, wireless health monitoring technology will add an extra six months to everyone’s life expectancy

Influence of data on economic decisions

  • By 2016, mobile digital assistants will account for more than $2 billion business in online shopping
  • By 2017, mobile commerce will exceed half of the US digital commerce revenue

Improving customer experience with data

  • By 2017, 70 percent of digital business models will deliberately factor in unstable rapidly shifting customer needs
  • By 2017, 50 percent of consumer product investments will target innovations in customer experience
  • By 2017, 20 percent of durable goods e-tailers will offer personalized products created by 3D printers
  • By 2020, retailers that message their in-store customers based on the customer location in the store will increase sales by five percent
