Mobile Development: Creating Standards for Mobile Apps
Smartphones are everywhere, including most businesses and organizations. Increasingly businesses are rolling out business apps for mobile devices, but until now there hasn’t been a standard approach for how mobile apps can be managed and secured for business use. The remedy this void, a group of technology companies have banded together to create an open standard that would provide a blueprint for app development.
The App Configuration for Enterprise (ACE) includes members like AirWatch, Cisco, Box, Workday, and Xamarin.
ACE standard will include specifications for:
- First time setup automation
- Secure app connectivity via corporate networks
- Single sign-on
- Access Control
- Security policies
- Remote data wiping
A standard mobility app framework will allow tools and other apps to be easier to integrate. Developers should be able to save time and be more productive. And end users will be presented with a more consistent and standard interface for the apps that they interact with.
Eric Klein, senior mobility analyst, VDC Research, said that “enterprise-ready app development has traditionally been fragmented, and ACE is the first industry-wide solution that can alleviate this problem regardless of application or EMM provider. Applications are what make mobility programs successful, and ACE is a strong step forward in enabling even more organizations with the updated, enterprise-ready apps they need regardless of their deployment structure.”
Jo Ann Buckner, vice president of marketing at Xamarin, said that “this collaboration takes a strong step toward solving the complexities involved with enterprise mobile development by creating an open industry standard for secure app management and deployment.”
