Enterprise Mobility: The $100 billion Opportunity, Just Waiting
“Enterprise mobility will continue to be one of the hottest topics in IT, and high on the list of priorities for all CIOs”, predicts Ovum in their 2015 Enterprise Mobility report.
Enterprise mobile apps have lagged far behind consumer apps. Many independent software developers just haven’t tried because the consumer app market is easy to enter and has been relatively lucrative. Only 15 percent of third party app development has been devoted to enterprise related development. Techcrunch calls enterprise mobile application development a $100 billion opportunity, just waiting.
Part of the problem to date too has simply been that mobile app development is harder. While there have been great successes, there have also been many failures.
Ty Lim, Vice President of Marketing at Capriza, identified the following types of problems that are seen with mobile apps that target the enterprise:
- Enterprise mobile apps aren’t built with the mindset of performing small well-constrained tasks. They often try to replicate existing large monolithic enterprise apps.
- Mobile apps built to use backend enterprise APIs, if not done right, can easily expose the business to risks by accidentally opening security holes relative to user privileges.
- Poor design of the app can lead to low adoption. As many as 78 percent of enterprise mobile apps are abandoned after the first use.
What will happen in 2015? A report by Strategic Analytics says that the enterprise mobile app will reach $61 billion by 2018. CDW says that 48 percent of businesses will be increasing their mobile app budgets in 2015, and more than 20 percent of those businesses will be increasing budgets by more than 10 percent.
