Enterprise Content Management (ECM): AIIM sees Major Disruption as Businesses Move Content to the Cloud
A recent report by AIIM finds the state of the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) industry under disruption and the technology will be dramatically different in a “post-ECM” era by 2020. Much of the report focuses on the general move of enterprise content from on-premise systems to the cloud.
Some of the findings of the report include:
- 22 percent of businesses are using the cloud to manage content
- 25 percent use a hybrid combination of cloud and on-premise tools to manage content
- 80 percent of businesses say that they have no problem storing non-sensitive content in the cloud
- 36 percent of businesses say that the cloud is safe enough to store sensitive data
The report also found that organizations continue to use a variety of disparate systems when managing content. More than half of organizations say that they’re using three or more ECM/DM/RM systems and nearly a quarter have five or more such systems.
Another interesting finding is that 85 percent of organizations said that mobile document creation, workflow and edit features are all capabilities that would be useful, less than a quarter of organizations have implemented such capability.
AIIM president John Mancini, said that “there is no doubt that organisations still require their content to be managed properly, but the term ‘ECM’ is past its prime as a description of the revolution that is being driven by mobile, analytics, cloud and collaborative technologies. Organizations are desperate for best practices to deal with the technology disruption that is occurring… All of this data points to an industry in transition. There are still many organizations that can benefit from more traditional ECM solutions that automate document-intensive processes. But there is also an explosion of content outside the realm of these kinds of structured processes, along with a revolution occurring in how, where, and when knowledge workers do their jobs. Even among the current users of ECM technologies, 52% believe that within five years, ECM systems will be an undifferentiated part of the IT infrastructure.”
