Human Machine Interface (HMI): The Art of Making Technology Easy
Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) combine hardware and software to assist humans to better interact with automated systems. Examples of HMI are humans controlling automated vehicles and interacting with plant floor automation. In a plant control environment, for example, HMI systems can monitor and control plant parameters and inputs.
Research and Markets estimates that the global HMI market will grow at a CAGR rate of 7.73 percent between 2015-2019. Companies like General Electric, Ford Motors, Siemens, Rockwell Automation, Bosch Rexroth, Emerson Electric, Digital Electronics, Honeywell International, Mitsubishi Electric are heavily involved with HMI technology.
One example where HMI technology is frequently applied is the human interface used in automobiles. Jeff Greenberg, Senior Technical Leader for HMI at Ford, said that “we are studying how human beings drive cars. Understanding how people drive underpins what we do in studying the user experience when at the wheel. This is a study of the science of driving.”
Increasingly automotive designers seek to incorporate technology tools into the automotive interface. Parrish Hanna, Ford’s Global Director of HMI , said that “people want to bring their digital lives into their vehicles, but how do we make those things compatible with driving?”
Mark Boyadjis, senior analyst and manager at IHS Automotive, said that “most of these technologies have such significant compound annual growth rates for two reasons – first, they are relatively new to the automotive industry. Also, they provide unique and valuable usability characteristics that make driving and operating infotainment systems easier on consumers.”
But a recent JD Powers survey found that rather than communication and entertainment, top on the list of automotive technology innovation with consumers are more practical transportation-focused capabilities like collision mitigation, which includes blind-spot detection and prevention, night vision, and enhanced collision-mitigation systems.
