Internet: Rate of Internet Growth Slowing
Mary Meeker recently delivered her 20th consecutive annual review of the state of the internet in 197 slides. Meeker had been an analyst and now works as a venture capitalist for Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. She talked about what’s changed over the last twenty years (a lot) and provided some hints as to what to expect in the future.
- The influence of the internet has been greatest with consumers and had the least effect on governments and policy making
- Surprisingly, both the growth rate of the internet and smartphone is slowing. Internet users rose 8% last year, compared to 11 percent in 2012.
- Less than one percent of the population accessed the internet via a mobile device in 1995; 73 percent did in 2014.
- Mobile devices now account for 29 percent of total screen viewing time
- Meeker sees the next generation of currently 12- to 24-year-olds as fueling user-generated content services like Instagrams and Snapchats
- Computer drone shipments increased in 2014 by 167 percent to 4.3 million units. A $1.7 billion industry
