ECM: Alfresco Most Disruptive Player?

By Dick Weisinger

The vendor landscape of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is changing.  Microsoft is trying hard to commoditize the lower end of the market with Sharepoint.  And Open-Source Alfresco is taking head-on traditional commercial ECM vendors.  Ovum Research’s Mike Davis said:

Alfresco has the technical capabilities, and along with Microsoft is likely to be the most disruptive player in the ECM market at the enterprise level in the next five years.  Using open source components, Alfresco aims to put together a lighter, faster and more ECM-comprehensive platform…  Using Open Source means that it is written to standards.

Alfresco has a big advantage over the competition.  It’s technology — Alfresco is a generation ahead of most other ECM products.  Alfresco brought together great developers from ECM leaders like Documentum and InterWoven and their years of ECM experience.  While many ECM vendors are saddled by age, legacy code, and integrations of various acquired products and companies, Alfresco started fresh and designed their product from the ground up using the newest technologies.

Alfresco’s fresh start has provided a flexible platform that can perform like a traditional ECM  system, but one that can also integrate smoothly with technologies like Web 2.0, mashups and Facebook.  Alfresco simplifies tasks that are often tedious in traditional ECM systems.  For example, one way to gain access to Alfresco is via their intelligent Virtual File System — access files like on a shared drive using CIFS, FTP or WebDav.
