Storage: Data Consolidation Cuts Costs
Companies can be more efficient in spending money on data management.
A Gartner study identified nine areas in which organizations could reduce costs related to data managment and integration.
An area ripe for cost savings is consolidation of data among databases. Gartners estimate that database consolidation could lower costs
by between 10 and 25 percent. Optimizing the number of licenses a company needs for data integration tools could also save as much as $250,000.
Gartner estimates that making intelligent and informed choices across all areas of data management could save hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars.
The nine areas that Gartner identifies as ways to save IT dollars as related to data management include:
- Database Consolidation
- Optimize Data Integration Tool Licensing
- Re-use existing data structures and integration processes before building
- Data-mart consolidation
- Create standards to enable reuse and agility
- Defer replacement of customized applications
- Consider Open Source licensing when possible
- Renegotiate services contracts
- Defer projects of low-priority and limited benefits
