Storage: Vendor Revenues Up Despite Declining Prices as Capacity Shipped Explodes

By Dick Weisinger

Disk storage capable of holding up to 28 billion gigabytes or 28.3 exabytes were sold in the first quarter of 2015, according to a report by IDC.  That’s a 41 percent jump from sales in the same quarter in 2014.  Sales amounted to $8.7 billion, a 6.8 percent increase from the previous year.

The top five storage vendors by market share are as follows:

  • EMC – 17.4 percent
  • HP – 14.6 percent
  • Dell – 10.2 percent
  • NetApp – 8.7 percent
  • IBM – 6.0 percent

All of the top five vendors except HP lost market share to a growing list of ‘other vendors’.  HP increased share by 1.5 percent.
