Cloud Computing: Governments Ripe for the Cloud
All levels of government are expected to move their data from legacy on-premise systems to the cloud from now until 2020, according to a survey by Socrata and sponsored by EMC Research.
- 79 percent of government agencies say that most or all of their current software and data are kept on on-premise hardware
- 75 percent of government agencies that they’re both interested in and open to using cloud technology
- 83 percent of government agencies say that it is important for them to have software that is user-friendly and easy to use
Rick Howard, Research Director at Gartner, said that “the burden of legacy technologies in government puts innovation on a path of incremental improvement when agility and quick solution delivery is expected. To demonstrate ‘digital now, digital first’ leadership in government, CIOs must flip their approach to managing IT from the inside-out perspective of legacy constraints to the outside-in view of citizen experience. It’s all about starting with the digital world and what is possible – thinking cloud, mobile and situational context first – and then considering, ‘How do we get there from here?’ using information and technology.”
