Cloud Computing: IDC Says the “Second Wave” of the Cloud is Coming but Only 1 Percent Fully Prepared

By Dick Weisinger

Businesses no longer see the cloud as just a way to reduce costs.  They are turning to the cloud to achieve innovation, growth and disruption, according to a new report by IDC sponsored by Cisco.

The report said that companies are now entering the “second wave” of the cloud, but only 1 percent have been able to optimize their strategy for how they utilize the cloud.  And the report finds that about one-third of businesses don’t have any cloud strategy.

Nick Earle, Cisco’s senior vice president, global cloud and managed services sales, said that “as we talk with customers interested in moving to the second wave of cloud, they are far more focused on private and hybrid cloud. Primarily because they realise that private and hybrid offer the security, performance, price, control and data protection organisations are looking for during their expanded efforts.”

Other findings from the IDC report include:

  • Perceived benefits of the cloud include speed, efficiency and revenue growth
  • More than half of companies expect that the cloud will help them increase revenues over the next two years
  • Hybrid cloud is favored by many companies because of security, performance and control
  • Hybrid cloud is being selected to automate policy (67 percent) and improve security (47 percent)
  • 83 percent of businesses are looking to a major IT provider to handle cloud services
