Big Data and Data Analysis: Data Quality Can Be the Most Difficult Challenge When Developing Big Data Apps

Evans Data Corporation recently released an extensive study on Big Data and Advanced Analytics.  The results were summarized on Forbes by Louis Columbus.

Which industries are using big data and data analytics?

  • 18 percent – Software industry
  • 11.6 percent – Manufacturing
  • 9.8 percent – Retail
  • 7.7 percent – Entertainment
  • 7.5 percent – Telecommunications
  • 6.6 percent – Utilities and Energy

Other findings of the Evans Data report include:

  • Customer-facing apps are among the most common big data and advanced analytics apps.  38.2 percent of all big data and advanced analytics apps fall under that category.
  • Manufacturers are rolling their own apps.  42.6 percent of big data apps in the manufacturing sector were built by enterprises themselves.
  • Data quality can be a killer.  19.2 percent of big data application developers say that data quality is their number one problem encountered when building their application.
