Storage:Companies See Big Benefits with Virtualization

By Dick Weisinger

Storage Virtualization is poised to grow from 21 percent to 47 percent over the next few years. That’s the finding of an online survey made by F5 Networks.

Virtualization of storage helps achieve location independence by abstracting the physical location of the data. The Virtualization system presents to the user a logical space for data storage and itself handles the process of mapping it to the actual physical location.

Advantages of storage virtualization include:
– makes it easy to migrate and reposition data, eg. move data from over-utilized devices, or moved to a more responsive device
– improved utilization of devices — storage capacity is pooled and can be easily expanded
– fewer points of management
– reduced costs because less time spent on provisioning, backup and moving data tasks

Other finding of the survey included:
– 80 percent surveyed said that they plan to deploy storage virtualization
– 86 percent of companies that have undertaken storage virtualization said that the project successfully met at least one or more of the original project goals
– 63 percent of US companies see the need for storage virtualization to work with a heterogeneous infrastructure as very important to their company
