Law Firm Data Breaches: One-Quarter of Large Law Firms Have Lost Data

By Dick Weisinger

As a whole, data security at law firms has an overall better record than other businesses, but lawyers still haven’t been immune to experiencing a data breaches and security issues.  Only 14 percent of law firms reported to a survey by the American Bar Association that they’ve experienced a data breach.  60 percent of those who say they’ve had a breach say that it caused no significant loss to their business.  The data was collected from a survey of 90,000 attorneys in practice.

Larger law firms though have been most susceptible to breaches.  Nearly one-quarter of law firms with more than 100 attorneys have had a data breach caused by a website hack or a lost/stolen computer or mobile device.

Among all law firms, more than half have no policy for handling email, the internet or social media.  Overall, 55 percent have a policy for managing documents and records, and among firms with more than 500 attorneys, 89 percent have document and records systems in place.

Only 11.4 percent of law offices said that they have cyber insurance., but 80 percent of attorneys at firms with more than 100 didn’t know whether they had insurance or not.
