Internet of Things (IoT): HealthCare Spearheads use of IoT Medical Devices

The Internet of Things (IoT) market is already huge and has a potential for very rapid growth over the next five years.  This is despite the fact that 87 percent of people have never heard of the Internet of Things (IoT).

There are roughly 5 billion IoT devices already and that is expected to increase ten-fold to 50 billion by 2020.  Cisco estimates that only .06 percent of things that potentially could be connected to the internet are.  Their guess is that there are at least 1.5 trillion devices and other things that might be linked in.

Healthcare is one market segment that is expected to be an early IoT adopter.  The global healthcare IoT market is expected to grow from $32 billion this year to $163 billion by 2020, according to a report by MarketandMarkets.

Some of the expected benefits of IoT applied to healthcare include:

  • Enable real-time communication of health indicators between patients and caregivers
  • Improve operational efficiency in hospitals and surgical centers by better managing clinical operations and tracking patients
  • Reduce the time involved in providing care
