Cloud Computing: Cloud Technology is now the Norm and Competitive Advantage From Its Use is Shrinking

By Dick Weisinger

The world has passed you by if you haven’t yet moved to the cloud, according to a new report by Verizon.  Verizon claims that so many companies have adopted cloud technologies that using the cloud really no longer provides that much additional competitive advantage.  84 percent of businesses that are using the cloud say that their usage has increased over the last year.

The survey found that 69 percent of companies have adopted the cloud for at least one major business process.  “As cloud increasingly becomes the norm, the edge it gives a company is falling. It still has a major role to play in delivering competitive advantage, but using cloud is now just table stakes…  In just a couple of years, we believe that significantly over half of all workloads — across companies of all kinds — will be running in the cloud.”   In the previous year’s survey, nearly one-third of businesses said that using the cloud provided them competitive advantage — this year only 16 percent said that.

In many organizations the cloud has become dominant for managing web apps and for development and testing.  But even for mission-critical applications like ERP, over on-third of companies say that they’ve moved at least have of their workload to the cloud.

These numbers though don’t distinguish between private, hybrid and public clouds.  Many businesses are expected to progressively move to the cloud.  First by setting up in-house private cloud computing, then with hybrid cloud capabilities, and then increasingly with at least some usage of the public cloud.

Dave Bartoletti, a principal analyst at Forrester Research, said that “the cloud is about much more than a place to get cheap servers.  It’s a place to turn great ideas into products faster than we have ever been able to before.”

  1. Thank you for the article!
You are absolutely right saying that cloud services become a norm. I assume that if majority of businesses use cloud, we’ll totally get high quality but it will not be giving that advance comparing to the other businesses.
