Technology: Virtualization Best Practices

By Dick Weisinger

David Marshall summarized Gartner’s recommendations for best practices around Virtualization:

  1. Start Small, Think Big
  2. Require a Rapid ROI
  3. Virtualize the Right Applications
  4. Define Your Storage Strategy
  5. Understand Software Issues
  6. Combine Virtual Machines Effectively

Gartner reports that the success of virtualized machines is eating into the standard x86 server market. In 2006 the report suggests that four percent of servers running were virtual, and that by 2009 they are forecasting that there will be four million virtual machines installed on x86 machines.

The market is still immature, but it is growing rapidly and Gartner calls it the most important trend for servers running through 2012. Part of the force behind virtualization is an effort to create a “fluid pool” of server resources available on demand.
