Internet of Things (IoT): Smart Cities, Commercial Buildings and Homes are Major Early IoT Adopters
Smart City IoT devices are expected to increase in number by nearly 40 percent this year, reaching 1.6 billion devices, according to Gartner. Devices used as part of building information management systems are driving the growth. The building devices include sensors for energy efficiency, security cameras and webcams, and indoor LEDs.
By 2018, devices in smart homes are likely to overtake devices deployed in commercial buildings. Home devices include smart TVs and set-top boxes, thermostats, security systems and kitchen appliances.
Bettina Tratz-Ryan, Gartner Research vice president, said that “smart commercial buildings will be the highest user of IoT until 2017, after which smart homes will take the lead with just over 1 billion connected things in 2018. Especially in large sites, such as industrial zones, office parks, shopping malls, airports or seaports, IoT can help reduce the cost of energy, spatial management and building maintenance by up to 30%… In 2016, commercial security cameras and webcams as well as indoor LEDs will drive total growth, representing 24% of the IoT market for smart cities… Incentives into the deployment of IoT in commercial real estate will fuel its development.”
Along with this growth comes the added worry of security. Rodney Joffe, Senior VP and Fellow at Neustar, said that “as more and more devices become tied into the Internet every day, the security threat will continue to expand to new industries and areas and so there needs to be a focus on security practices before any other. Homes will move from being interconnected to information and smart enabled, and integrated services environment that will provide value to the home and individual ambience”.
