Enterprise Software: Containers Expected to Sweep Enterprise IT in 2016
Containers topped the lists for one of the hottest IT technologies for 2016.
Serdar Yegulalp of Infoworld, for example, wrote that “with nearly every major IT product either adopting them outright or building in support for them, containers are guaranteed to continue changing IT through the coming year.” Scott Hammond, Joyent CEO, said that “containers are eating the world. Everyone is using containers, learning about them, experimenting with them, and you have to wonder why? As developers, we have this love affair with containers because they allow us to simplify and accelerate the development process, and get from dev to test to runtime very fast”
Bryan Cantrill, CTO of Joyent, explained that “Containers are all about developing software faster, getting it from the laptop to the cloud as fast as possible.” Matthew Pick, tehcnology manager at HBC Digital, said that the benefits containers brings to business are: self-healing, portability and speed.
Containers provide a way to package up software applications, services and scripts as a single unit that can easily be transported into any environment, resized, and spun up or doown, as needed.
Dave Bartoletti, principal analyst at Forrester, said that “Modern apps are hybrid, and we are not going back. Containers represent the next wave of having the tools we need to start carving applications into smaller bits.” Bartoletti said that interest by Forrester clients in containers and how to deploy them has increased by a factor of ten over the last two years.
But despite the high interest and benefits of containers, uptake by enterprises to date has still been low. Forrester found, for example, that at this point, only 8 percent of enterprise developers are using containers for production use. It seems inevitable that uptake will swing rapidly upwards in 2016.
