Technology: Enterprise Software Follows Consumer Software Lead
Gartner has come up with another list of ten. This time the list consists of ten technologies that they see shaping the direction of IT departments between now and 2012. They predict that the gap between consumer software and technologies used in business software will narrow. Web Mashups and Social Networking are two areas that will become much more mainstream in the enterprise.
Business software will use social networking to help them collect feedback from customers, employees, partners and suppliers and bring all the information together in a way to drive new business strategy. Mashups will become commonplace and so easy to do that a new category of disposable applications will appear, allowing applications to be realized that previously would have been considered to niche or of such low return to not be worth the time and budget.
Gartner is also predicting new ways for data to be presented. New presentation technologies include organic LEDs, digital paper and billboards, holographic and 3D imaging and smart fabric.
Gartner’s complete list of top ten technologies to drive IT over the next five years is:
- Multi-core and hybrid processors
- Virtualisation and fabric computing
- Social networks and social software
- Cloud computing and cloud/web platforms
- Web mashups
- User interface
- Ubiquitous computing
- Contextual computing
- Augmented reality
- Semantics
