Internet of Things (IoT): More Than 50 Percent of Heavy Industry Businesses to Use IoT Before End of Year

By Dick Weisinger

Heavy industries like utilities, oil, and gas are some of the biggest users of the Internet of Things (IoT), according to a recent survey by Gartner.  “Light industries”, like service-oriented businesses are experimenting with IoT technologies but on a much smaller scale than industries like utilities and manufacturing.

Chet Geschickter, research director, Gartner, said that “2016 will be a very big year for IoT adoption. We are starting to see a wide range of IoT use cases across virtually all industries. But, the big challenge now is demonstrating return on investment. Executives need to validate the contribution that IoT can make in order to justify large-scale rollouts.”

Gartner found that 43 percent of organizations say that they plan to use IoT technologies before the end of 2016.  56 percent of “heavy industry” businesses are expected to be using IoT before the end of 2016.  Specifically the breakdown of usage and planned usage is as follows:

  • 29 percent are currently using IoT
  • 14 percent plan to use IoT before the end of 2016
  • 21 percent plan to implement IoT, but sometime after 2016.
