Open Data: Government Continues to Expand Investment

By Dick Weisinger

Open data is data made openly available, often by an API, that allows others to use, republish and repurpose the information with no copyright or patent restrictions.  The term is often applied especially to data collected by all levels of government.

Eric Eden, Socrata Chief Marketing Officer, said that “expanding commitment and investment from government entities spanning federal, state and local are very promising signs that more communities will benefit from open data in the near-term.”

A survey reported by Socrata on Open Data in government found the following:

Commitment.  US federal, state and local governments are all getting involved in the deployment of open data.  56 percent of federal organizations say that they have a goal of opening up as much of their data as possible.

Investment.  44 percent of federal organizations say that they will be investing more this year than last in opening up their data.  When all levels of government are considered, one-quarter say that they plan to invest more on open data.

Results. Governments leaders believe that opening data is a path to greater economic development. To date, the impact has been seen with creation of new businesses, new jobs, and increased tax revenues as a result of that growth.

Efficiency. Government leaders believe that the use of open data is helping them to become more efficient, especially relative to maintaining records and responding to information requests.
