Internet Speeds: A Race For Faster Access
Internet speeds are growing by leaps and bounds. AT&T is in the middle of implementing their ultra-fast fiber-based GigaPower Network in San Francisco and San Jose areas. Select communities within those metro areas will see speeds of up to 1 gigabyte per second. Other service providers like Verizon have similar fiber plans in the works. Google Fiber is also slowly bringing fast speeds to select communities across the United States.
But rollout of the infrastructure needed for ultrafast fiber networking will take some time. Other options that may be cheaper and quicker to implement are also showing up.
For example, a startup called Starry is introducing a device called a Starry Point that can receive and transmit internet communications to a nearby central rooftop unit. The rooftop unit is able to communicate to devices within a one kilometer range and one rooftop unit can support 600 to 900 customers. The cost of the Starry station installed in each home is about $25 compared to a cost of nearly $2500 to wire a single home with fiber. The Starry technology is expected to be able to transmit at speeds from 300 megabytes per second to as high as one gigabyte.
Yet another small company, Sckipio Technologies, based in Israel, announced their solution called G.fast that uses new technology called Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA). DBA can turn existing coax phone lines into broadband transmitters that can reach as high as 1.5 gigabits per second in each direction. The technology is exciting because it would allow fast connections without requiring the expensive rewiring of buildings. AT&T and Canadian operator Telus both are interested in the technology.
