Robotic Process Automation (RPA): Re-imaging Both Humans and Robots in Business Processes

By Dick Weisinger

Automating the repeatable is the goal of robotic process automation (RPA).  RPA involves building and programming robots to do common repetitive tasks.  A report by Transparency Market Research estimates that the RPA market is growing at an annual rate of 60 percent.  By 2020 the global IT Robotic Automation Market is expected to reach $5 billion.

Businesses that have implemented or will implement RPA within the next 12 months, according to a survey by BluePrism, say that their plans for RPA include:

  • Robotic automation of manual data entry (97 percent)
  • Understanding of basic financial processes (52 percent)
  • Rolling out end-to-end robotic processing that can completely replace humans (51 percent)

Neil Kinson, chief of staff at Redwood Software, said that “when we talk about robotics, we are no longer talking about plugging in ‘dumb’ machines to mimic human activity at the user level, but integrating smart technology with built-in understanding of the end-to-end process and best practice.  However, for as long we remain fixated on the idea that robots replace humans – rather than re-imagine processes – businesses will be led to miss the true potential of robotic automation.”
