Open Source: Businesses Readily Adopt Open Source but Often Don’t Track its Use or Patch Vulnerabilities

By Dick Weisinger

Open Source software permeates infrastructure and software development projects almost everywhere.  A survey by Black Duck and North Bridge found that 65 percent of organizations now say that they’re using open source as part of their development and 55 percent say that open source products make up elements of their production infrastructure.

The number of organizations using open source is likely even higher.  The survey found that how organizations track software make it easy for open source components to be adopted without IT or other business oversight even being aware of it.

  • Half of companies say that they don’t have a formal approval process for selecting and approving open source
  • Nearly half of companies also don’t have any process in place to track which open source products are being used by their organization
  • About one third of companies aren’t making any attempt to track and correct open source vulnerabilities

Why are businesses using open source?  Businesses are finding that they can be more agile by selecting open source products and that it enables them to be more innovative and achieve an accelerated time to market.

Respondents reported use of open source to drive innovation through faster, more agile development; accelerated time to market and vastly superior interoperability.
Additional innovation is afforded by open source’s quality of solutions; competitive features and technical capabilities; and ability to customize.
