ECM: The Effect of Regulations on Goverment Agencies
Businesses aren’t the only ones coming under pressure to come to terms with issues around compliance. Federal, State and Local government agencies are also under pressure to better track and protect their digital information.
While businesses may need to contend with the specifics of Sarbanes-Oxley, governments in turn need to comply with initiatives like the Government Paperwork Elimination Act (GPEA), Records Management via the Department of Defense’s 5015.2 regulations, the US Federal Rules of Civil Procedures (FRCP), the Continuity of Operations Program (COOP) and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Canada has the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
Government agencies are turning to ECM tools to help manage, protect and make available information that can contain things like official documents, regulatory submissions, engineering and planning, land survey records, and contracts.
Agencies are adopting ECM to assist with:
- privacy and accountability requirements
- public-facing digital documents
- simplification of information search
- web content management
- collaboration and workflow
ECM can help agencies become more efficient in how they can communicate both internally and externally. The system can reduce buraucracy for constituents, speed-up requests for information, and allow agencies to save on transportation and mailing costs.
