Enterprise IT Infrastructure: Hyperconvergence Consolidates Infrastructure into a Single Hardware Box
A complete enterprise network packaged in a box. That’s sort of what a technology called hyper-convergence infrastructure (HCI) is promising. It is a single hardware box that can be bought in commodity that integrates compute, storage, networking and virtualization resources. When first introduced, businesses worried that HCI put too much reliance onto a single hardware vendor, but the devices have become popular.
Today, according to a study by 451 Research, 40 percent of enterprises are using HCI, and of those, 76 percent are using it within critical production environments.
Andrew Butler, analyst at Gartner, said that “hyperconvergence simply didn’t exist two years ago. Near the end of this year, it’s an industry in its own right.”
Christian Perry, Research Manager at 451 Research, said that “today’s businesses expect the same flexibility from their internal IT that a public cloud service can provide. Converged and hyper-converged infrastructure are transforming the technology that underpins today’s business and the teams that manage it. As a result, we’re rapidly approaching the day when the generalist-driven infrastructure administrator emerges as the key cog in business operations.”
