Digital Twins: Virtual Modeling for Optimizing Performance of Both Products and People
Digital Twins. Gartner says it’s a top technology for 2017, but what is it?
A digital twin is a computer model of a physical object. Every aspect of the object can be accounted for in the model, so it’s possible to work with the physics, data sets and analytics of the model and be able to make very accurate predictions about how the object will respond in real life. With modeling, product failures and performance can be analyzed. Digital modeling during the design phase of a product allows the product to be iteratively changed in order to optimize all aspects of the object. All phases of the lifecycle of a product can be fully analyzed and understood before the real object is even released.
Jamie Miller, president and CEO of GE Transportation, wrote that with digital twins “we can track the health of each component — including history, harmonic signatures, stresses, strains, performance, emissions, operating environment, you name it. We can see how all of these variables are changing over time and relative to the health of other components and enabling us to take targeted actions to optimize outcomes including everything from fuel efficiency to unplanned downtime.”
The concept of digital twins isn’t limited to just machinery or consumer products. In the future, humans will be modeled with digital twins too.
Steve Rosenbush, editor at the Wall Street Journal, said that “I believe we will have a digital twin at birth, and it will take data off of the sensors everybody is running, and that digital twin will predict things for us about disease and cancer and other things. I believe we will end up with health care being the ultimate digital twin. Without it, I believe we will have data but with no outcome, or value.”
