Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT): Transforming the Manufacturing Process
Manufacturing is in the process of being transformed by technology. Business models are changing along with underlying business processes. Those businesses that are able to make the change have seen average increases of 28.5 percent of their revenues according to TATA Consultancy. The Internet of Things (IoT) is having a strong influence on the direction of manufacturing, improving both the efficiency and flexibility of the manufacturing process. Huawei estimates that by 2025 there will be 100 billion connected devices, with the majority being on the industrial side.
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is being driven by four things:
- Sensors. Anything, from machines, to packages, to people can be tagged and monitored.
- Internet Everywhere. No matter where something is, it is able to update and stream information about itself onto the internet.
- Advanced Hardware. Manufacturing techniques like 3D printing provide great flexibility and can adopt quickly to changing requirements.
- Analytics. Smart software, data processing and analytics is able to extract information and identify trends from device data.
Ciaran Dynes, Vice President of Products at Talend, wrote that “the business benefits that IIoT promises will far outweigh the challenges that may need to be overcome in order to get there. To stay competitive, today’s companies will need to staff up, strategize, and plan for the newly connected world, or risk being outperformed.”
