Enterprise Content Management (ECM): Gartner ECM Magic Quadrant 2016
Gartner recently released the 2016 ECM Magic Quadrant report. Things are moving quickly in this space. The report was released at the end of October but cut-off for the products considered was May 2016. That means that the report does not include Sharepoint 2016 and also the acquisition of Documentum by Open Text. Maybe the ECM report needs to be updated every six months to keep more current.
In previous years of ECM Magic Quadrant reports, Alfresco showed up as a Visionary. This year Alfresco is positioned in the Challenger quadrant directly next to Microsoft and Lexmark. ECM Leaders are IBM, Open Text and Hyland.
Gartner has changed the definition of ECM to take on a more service-oriented perspective:
“ECM is a set of services and microservices, embodied either as an integrated product suite or as separate applications that share common APIs and repositories, to exploit diverse content types, and serve multiple constituencies and numerous use cases across an organization.”
Gartner made the following two year predictions. By 2018, expect to see the following:
- Half of enterprises will manage content on hybrid systems (cloud/on-premise)
- More than one-fifth of businesses will be managing content from multiple organizations
- File synchronization and sharing will be a standard built-in ECM function
- Half of big-name ECM vendors will re-architect their software to be cloud-based
- One-fifth of business content will be machine authored
