Security: Human Error Leading Cause of Data Loss. Senior Managers Most Culpable.
When it comes to cybersecurity at businesses often the weakest link is the employee. Many studies have found that mistakes by employees cause the largest number of security and data losses.
For example, a recent study by Databarracks found that human error accounts for about a quarter of all data loss issues at businesses, the number one factor for data loss in businesses. Human error has ranked as number one every year since 2008 except in 2014 when hardware failure came up on top.
Michael Patsalos-Fox, Stroz Friedberg CEO , said that “insiders are by far the biggest risk to the security of a company’s sensitive information, whether it’s a careless executive or a disgruntled employee.”
While employees can be blamed for a lot of the problems, what may be most surprising is that senior managers are often the worst offenders. A study by the University of Alabama at Birmingham found that senior managers are twice as likely as other workers to take files with them after leaving a job. 58 percent of senior managers also admit to having accidentally sent sensitive information to the wrong person.
