ECM: Mid-Range ECM vendors may be a better choice

By Dick Weisinger

The CMS Watch report of ECM vendors is out and their conclusion about which vendors top the list isn’t what you might think. Their recommendation is to think twice before selecting products from the market leaders. The reason? Too much risk.

CMS Watch considers products from top vendors like IBM/FileNet, EMC/Documentum and Microsoft riskier bets than mid-market vendors because product offerings from these vendors have strayed from ECM basics. These vendors have had large acquisitions and are in a transition process of integrating acquired technologies and putting too much emphasis on new technology like Web 2.0.

The report finds that top tier vendors should return back to having a focus on solid ECM basics. One example is workflow automation. Alan Pelz-Sharpe, author of the report, said that “the tried and tested way for firms to watch their costs and reduce overhead is to impose proper automated workflow.
But some vendors have neglected their core audience and rushed off into Web 2.0.”
