Technology: Top Strategic IT Technologies

By Dick Weisinger

Gartner has released their list of Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2009.  This list follows up and echoes many of the same entries as the top 10 Disruptive Technology list Gartner put out in June and last year’s Strategic Technology list.  Nothing very revolutionary in what they came up with, but enough to capture the IT headlines.

Gartner defines a strategic technology as “an existing technology that has matured and/or become suitable for a wider range of uses.”

Here it their list:

  • Virtualization
  • Cloud Computing
  • Servers  (evolving to be more easily provisioned and to better manage capacity and configurations)
  • Web Oriented Architectures (WOA)
  • Enterprise Mashups
  • Specialized Systems
  • Social Software and Social Networking
  • Unified Communications
  • Business Intelligence
  • Green IT
